Corks

Main Street stocks many different types of corks. We have noticed over the past several years that cork has gotten more expensive and of a lower quality. Please see the cork info page for more on this topic. But, even so, all of the cork that we carry we can recommend heartily. These corks will NOT become friable, broken or ooze as will many of the low-end corks out there these days. We have searched high and low to get you the best corks we can at the best prices we can...

Corks for wine bottles come in #7, #8 and #9 diameter sizes.

We have found that #7's are too small - wine will ooze out and they do not seal well enough to protect the wine from damage. Therefore we do not carry any #7 sizes.

The following corks all need a wine corker in order to insert them into bottles:

#8 corks go in pretty easy and pull out pretty easy, but they make good seals. Use #8 corks on fruit wines and wines you plan on aging under 2 years, You will need a corker to insert these into wine bottles.

#9 corks go in with a good shove, and you probably want a high-end (more expensive) corker to insert them properly; they come out with a mighty pull. They make the best seals for the longest aging periods, but they are extra work to deal with.

All corks come in 1.5 inch or 1.75 inch length. 1.75 inch is better for longer periods of aging. All of our corks are non-chamfered: these provide much better protection than chamfered corks due to their extra length.

Main Street also stocks tapered corks which can be used for vinegars, oils, or short-term aging of wines and liqueurs. These do NOT need a corker in order to be inserted, but they should not be used for long term aging of alcohol. The pouring spigots are great for doling out small amounts of oil, vinegar, wine, hot sauce, etc. Please specify color, or we will send an assortment of different ones....
